Last week after I parked & locked my car, neighbor called me saying that some noise is coming your car.

I checked and radiator fan on even though car was off and locked. I called skoda service adviser and he told me to remove battery's negative terminal to prevent battery from draining.

Next day I tool car to dealership to check for the problem. He said radiator fan is short and He quoted me approximate 25000(12000 for new fan, 8000 for controller and rest labor) to fix this problem.

I found this way too expensive so I said I will think about it and get back to you. When went to collect my car, everything was normal. Radiator fan was off, when I turned on the car, it started spinning and when turned off it stopped.

So, I asked him that if you need to change whole thing why is it working right now? He started giving vague answers like we reconnected controller and its a temporary fix and bla bla.

I am using my car since last week and touchwood, no problem has been reported.

I really think this is another case of rip off by skoda dealer. Or am I missing something?

Kunal, for my non-technical brain, the issue seems like a one-off due to a lose connection or something of that sort. The members who're technically able-d will share the right reasons for this or what needs to be done.

If it is working right now, I recommend you wait it out until the right suggestions are given. Hoping the issue doesn't resurface in your case. Also check on the Skoda forum www.briskoda.net to see if similar issue has been reported by any owner.

Cheers,
aK

Yeah i agree with what ajay says, i had similar problem with my power windows, it stopped working suddenly and i was not able to close all the windows using the key, i just started the engine twice and turned it off and the problem was gone, i think my ne was an electonics problem so such kind of problems are common in cars. Why replace the fan that is working (over working in this case Smile ).

Thoughtful of you for not biting the bait.

Keep it under observation, it may be a one off case. Consult a local mechanic if you know any (for second opinion). it is most likely a wiring issue or controller thing at max.

Update :
The problem seems genuine as once again I observed the fan not stopping.

Took my car to local mechanic, waiting for his reply.

Is the ambient temperature high/engine too hot, in some cases I have seen that the radiator fan keeps running/starts automatically when the temp is too high.... Just a thot

Yes, My first thought was this only, I kept the bonnet open and waited for half an hour, still it hadn't stopped so the whole exercise.

Got call from my local mechanic, he thinks its thermostat switch's problem and will confirm by evening.

BTW, has anyone bought VAG diagnostic tool? Now, I don't trust cons at Skoda Auto and thinking to buy one for my self. Sourcing the parts is not that much of an issue for me as I am in HCV and Material Handling Equipment's Parts business.

Go through Behemoth's initial ownership review of his skoda yeti or skoda laura (there are three threads) on tbhp. He has bought the VCDS cables. You can ping him and the other guys to see you it works.

From what I understand you will need a cable that will connect your Fab to a windows Laptop. Then you will need a VAG-COM software on your laptop and you are good to go.

I am also thinking of buying it in a few months time.

Update :

Yesterday evening my mechanic confirmed that the problem is in Fan Relay

(99% this thing, will confirm when I get the used one back - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/skoda-fabia-2001-vw-polo-fan-control-relay-module-1J0919506M-/120872715795?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1c24934613)

I called one of my friend who imports car spares, he said it will be around 2K. Skoda dealer quoted 9K for it and another 13K for fan + labor.

I received spare today and mechanic said its perfect and genuine imported part. He said problem is sorted, and he gave battery for charging. Hopefully will get my car back tomorrow.

Total cost : 2K for relay + 500 (assumed) to mechanic. = 2500

Skoda ASS's estimation : 25000.

On your face Skoda!

Robin,

Even we could have done the same thing for our front brake pad and disc. instead of paying 16,000 we might have ended up in spending around 5,000.

We need a way to source the parts and find a goog mechanic. I am clueless in both.
