Hi guys,
I am having Fabia 1.2 Ambient. I am experiencing problem in shifting to first gear from neutral. This happens during the traffic signal, because of this i get honking from vehicles behind me Laughing

Did anybody experience this kind of problem, is there any solution with out going to the service station as i would like to continue the experience of running the new car.

Cheers

IMO Fabia has got the best gear box in this price range. Gear shifts are very precise and every time accompanied by a conforming "thuk" sound. But sometimes the travel to the 1 gear from neutral is slightly rough and the conforming sound is missing. It is still very good but I miss the perfect shifts with the sound. Initially I had problem getting used to the reverse gear. May be my expectations are very high because of otherwise excellent shifts Smile . We can try this on other Fabias when we meet next. Hope to see you too there.

I have not experienced this yet (anyway, I never am in neutral). But do try this.

If in neutral and you get stickyness/roughness in shifting. Come back to neutral and release clutch pedal. Then try again. Its something I have experienced in other cars.

You mean you have noticed in other Fabias? Coming back to neutral and trying again does work.

That problem seems rare. Never had a problem with the gear shift. Maybe it is an isolated case issue. If it persists in spite of proper use, and initial self trouble shooting [reading manual], I recommend an SC visit to check all is fine with gear assembly and all connected [invinsible in the man to approach for tech talk]..

Otherwise, Fabia's gear shift is positively one of the best in a hatchback. Hyundai Getz had a good one too, but I think Fab is the BEST, of hatchbacks in India.

Hi Rudy,

I also have never experianced any problems in the gear shift. Infact the gear shift is really very slick and smooth.

Its better you show this problem to your dealer/service center for better assistance.

HI Uneet,

Sorry for replying late... As I am not getting any notification e-mail for any of the topics.

It happens rarely and when i tried showing it to the service person in the show room, it never happened.

As nipunkul said, releasing clutch pedal and try changing gear works out, dont know what the reason is.

Thought of addressing it if it becomes regular....

cheers

Of late I am also trying to focus on the notchiness on rare occasions. One thing is for sure, it is very hard to replicate the problem. It never happens twice in a row.

The scenario where I have encountered it most is when I am slowing down from 3rd or higher gear and need to shift to first gear.
I'll focus more on the pattern so that it can be reproduced at the service station (I know I won't be able to).

BTW, has it got anything to do with gear oil? What effect will oil change have?

I don't think that the gear oil has some effect, as it started happening to me from the 2nd month of the purchase....

Is there any problem giving accelerator while the clutch is still half engaged(Like we do with any other car like maruti, or even with bike...). I have been told by the dealer that don't give accelerator with clutch in action, otherwise the clutch plate will wear-out soon.

Here is a link from team-bhp about clutch riding.

If you are not already on team-bhp, we also have a Fabia thread started by our own General, Netchef, and contribution from most of the members already here.

Try not to drive like this in any car. Last so the Skodas.
Yes it does wear out the clutch faster than normal.

If you want a good motivation factor to change your driving style, just ask the service center an estimate cost for a 'clutch overhaul' job. It is just not amusing Shocked

Do you tend to push the gear from the top a little, while putting it to first gear ? Tends to happen if you rest your hand on the gear knob while driving.
This might be causing the gear box to confuse between 1st and Reverse - and not slotting correctly.

Might be you are right, I will keep this in mind when it happens next time.

In this situation I release the clutch completely and applying 1st gear works fine. This is suggested by nipunkul in the second reply of this topic.

Rs 16000 to be precise, for a clutch overhaul.

Finally got the reason of this problem.
its because of putting the first gear from top, this confuses the gear box between first and reverse gear.
Thanks jbarai for your observation..

Its strange behavior from gear, i thought the problem is because of putting the gear from top, but it is not so, reason is yet to be fond out...

I re-apply the clutch when this scenario arises, that's the best solution so far....
