Folks,

Something quirky has happened again today. When i move the indicator stalk to turn the left signal indicator on, the indicator starts blanking real rapidly. As if its caught a dreadful cold. If i have to signal towards the right, the signal indicator blinks with the regular interval speed that it always has done. I have had a problem like this in one of my other cars too but then the same problem would not be isolated to just the left turn signal. it would apply to all i.e. both left and right side indicators. And none so soon. It was a good 70k kms down the line on my Esteem when it had this problem.

Just to check when i switched on the Hazard switch, the interval frequency of the indicators work fine.

Its only when i need to signal left, that the indicator light blinks as if its in a tearing hurry.

Any clues to what the problem could be? Its been that way since morning and continues to behave in the same manner.

I think there could be a problem with the stalk switch and i guess i need to have something else replaced on a just around 6 month old car. On the bright side, at this rate i might end up with a new car by the end of the 2 year warranty period. Smile

Do let me know in case any of you brethren have come across something like this.

Cheers,
rm

Hi RM,

I did have this issue too, and the same left side indicator goes haywire when applied [blinks at a faster than normal rate]. When I immediately inspected the outside, I realized the front left side turn indicator was not working and it was a light's wire inside the car, that was bitten by a rat, which caused the front left turn indicator to not work [and also the faster blinking].

Of course, I didn't manage to isolate and find out the reason for quicker blinking, but when TAFE fixed the wire for the front indicator bulb to work [for free], the faster blinking issue got fixed too.

ak,

Thanks for that. I will check whether the indicator is actually working or not from the outside which is something that i should have done earlier. I blame my overt lack of exuberance to anything remotely requiring physical exertions.

I will check that out and post my findings.

Thanks again.

Fast blinking is designed by purpose. It is to let the driver know that something is wrong in the circuit. It could be fused bulb or a disconnect in the wire.

Ak,

You hit the nail on the head mate. i checked and as you had said the LHS indicator isint working. Now whether its a fused bulb or a blown wire i will only come to know once i pay my homages at the A.S.S.

Robin. Thanks mate for that info. Is it something that you have learnt from experience or is it something that is mentioned in the manual. My apologies again since i have not combed the manual tooth and nail.

Just one of the myriad benefits of this forum. Had it not been for you guys i would have been figuring out 'n' number of pointless reasons of why the indicator was acting crazy.

Ah!! Wisdom from the Great Chief. I wish the General would start posting some lengthy interludes. Of his Chinese conquest and more. C'mon sir. Lets have it.

Thanks again Robin for sharing from the Great General's annals.

ak... got the LHS indicator bulb changed. Though it was not the bulb that had blown but was a frayed wire. Why there was a frayed wire in the first place... i don't know. For the moment we will blame it on a poor rodent who may have been completely innocent in this case.

The bulb had to be changed coz the wizard who was looking into it broke it while tinkering with it.

Also found out regarding the quirky radio... it seems that this is a common problem with the Dance units only. And it seems thats its only effecting Fabia's here in Hyderabad. the service engineer brought out a camera and showed me various pictures that they had taken from other cars with the same problem and its between those two stations only. They said that they have also communicated the same to Skoda and they might have an Engineer coming in from there sometime. Though honestly i dont think thats going to happen.

I think i will mail Skoda and tell them in a slightlly more stringent fashion regarding the problem.

Lets see if anything happens.

Thanks again ak and Robin for all the info shared.

Hey RM,

Good that you've got the problem sorted man.. It's fortunate for us forum members to consult each other before we head to the A.S.S, since we're better informed of what could be the issue and also at times, what the remedy is Wink

Helps us from being taken on any sort of ride, by the A.S.S centre.

Kudos to the forum. Cheers.

Yes sir. Absolutely. I am planning to speak to any Fabia owner that i casually brush into and invite them to come over to the forum.

The more the merrier.

Lets recap the Ohms Law of School Time Physics
V=IR
V=Voltage
I=Current
R=Resistance

All Vehicle are DC Circuits, with Signal Indicator through a Mechanical Relay, actuated through magnetising and de magnetising of the relays through flow of current. In the eventuality of any Bulb/Wire going off, there is reduction of resistance in the overall resistance of the indicator (By Reciprocal Factor) circuit hence increase in flow of current and increased magnetic effect on the relay resulting in the increased frequency of magnetizing cycles.

Point taken sir. But there is still something that i dont understand.

On my very first M800, a condition like this happened but all the indicators were functioning. Every single one of them No blown wire either as that would mean that atleast one of them should not work.

Left it to nature.

Good you raised this point of M800. I remember new model M800 which were released in Mid of 1988 had indicator going constant instead of blinking and the rear tail light orange colour fading away. Problem for all signal lights going on in place of blinking was found in the defective lot of relays, souced from a local vendor in India.

If I remeber correctly, even in my Premier Padmini 1982 Model, an indicator bulb blowing off would make the blinking frequency faster.

Another obsertavion which I wish to share in this forum on my Fabia is optimal FE by adhering to the following gear shifting rule.

First to Second Under 1500 RPM 20Km/Hr 5.5 L/100KM
Second to Third Under 1500 RPM 30Km/Hr 6.00L/100KM
Third to Fourh Under 1500 RPM 40Km/Hr 5.0L/100KM
Fourt to Fifth Under 1500 RPM 50Km/Hr 4.8L/100KM
Cruise on Fifth 1500RPM 70KM/Hr 3.8L/100KM
Above condition is with A/C On during the Day.

On Red Lights while car is idling 0.8L/Hr. With A/C On
0.5L/Hr With A/C Off.

Currently my ODO says 3000Km.

The one we had was picked up in '87. Out of the first batch of cars that came after the makeover. Believe me at that time we were used to the Amby Mark II and Mark III's where the only difference between them was the shape of the indicator lights. One was oval and the other was round. The Mark IV had square ones. Smile

And this thing came out and the first thought that came to our mind was as to which car this was in the first place. When my mother realised it was the new M800, she wanted the booking to be cancelled immediately. She just dint like the shape. Couple of months down the line things were fine.

Time is a great healer. In most cases atleast. Wink
