My planning and preparation for the Bangalore - Leh trip has begun.
Recent purchased items:
Jump start cable - I could not get it ready made. Got it made - cost - 700
Life hammer - cost - 600. It is a Chinese stuff with torch and hazard light blinker. The lights can stop working anytime Smile. But the blade and hammer are good.
Fire extinguisher - cost - only 150 (small bottle). Haven't tested it yet

Items I already had:
    Puncture repair kit
Air filling pump - got it for 500 or something. But still works.

Items to buy:
Tow rope - I am looking for a 15 - 20 feet long rope with hooks. Those available are only 10 - 13 feet long. cost - 1000 to 1500 for both steel and nylon material.

The car has done 23.5 K so far. It would have reached 25K when I service it for the trip. Last service was done at 18K in Dec 09. Which means I can skip the oil change (haven't decided yet, will consult).

Things that will defintely require change - air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, brake pads (need to have fresh pads for the trip) coolant and others..

Tyres have more than half life left in them.

P.S I am planning keep the trip live here, as far as possible. Posting pics may be a problem though.

Hi Robin,

Iam sure it's gonna be a trip of a lifetime for you.

It is not easy pickings and make sure you have planned your overnight destination correctly in advance.

Hey Robin,

Wonderful news man.. Such a sad thing that I cannot join you. Anywayz..

My recommendations for other items to keep stock of in your boot:

1. Adhesives - Araldite, Fevicol regular, Fevicol quick-fix, etc.. [these will be useful when you have to fix any broken items, joints, leaks, when on the road, and such issues.

2. Tapes - Cellophane tape, double-sided adhesive tape and then the tape that plumbers use [black, blue color types]. A must to hold things together like plastics, wires etc, should things fail or fall apart.

3. Medical kit - General medicines for headache, cough, cold and sore throat, since in a trip of the magnitude of Leh, you'll be eating and drinking from all sources, so safe to consume medicine when you already feel you're going to fall sick.

Also, consult doctor or individuals who've already been to Leh/Ladakh on bikes/cars and check the medicines they'd stocked up/consumed to keep up with altitude sickness and pressure problems [most of these med info are available in plenty over the web and blogs].

4. Currency and coins in Change - Flashing 100 rupee notes at all toll boths will be a pain by increasing your waiting time there, plus not always they're willing to immediately tender change, and also to account for the idiots who keep honking from behind for you to move soon.

5. Powerful Torch - Apart from a normal LED torch, it's a good idea to keep a very powerful, big torch [those barrel type one]. It will be useful to flash down someone [to stop for help, of course] like a trucker who is several levels of ascent or decent than you. A powerful torch can have a long travel, apart from wide reach.. A model that can recharge via car charger is a better idea, than batteries only.

It's a good idea to keep a considerable amount of your stash as change, for use at toll boths.

I'll write more when I can think of more.. Have a great planning session Robin.. It's fun to plan.

Adhesives - good idea!
Currency and coins in Change - Yes, I don't like the candies that they offer instead of change Smile.
Rest all is already taken care of.
