Hi Guys,

I have narrowed down my search to either Nikon D5000 or Canon 500d.

Pls help me decide. Main purpose would be to take sharper indoor pics of the garments samples that we make, vacations, and sometime making a movie.

So guys pls help, any other suggestion is always welcomed.

Budget range is around 30k.

Your requirement seems very simple. I don't mean to discourage you, but let's see if you even need a DSLR.. Of course, if you 'desire' a DSLR for photography, other than your business requirement, then there is no debating on that.

ok. Here goes..

1. I don't know about Nikon cameras, but the Canon EOS 500D certainly won't fall within 30K, unless its a grey market purchase [without bill and warranty]. I personally, don't recommend any purchase, beyond 5K, without B&W.
The lowest price I've heard for EOS 500D in bangalore, with B&W is 37K. Just a pointer.

2. Your major application as you've mentioned, are to take sharp photographs of garment samples and vacations. For this, a DSLR is 'not' a requirement, but surely a good one to have. The thing is, unless you're very familiar with using a DSLR [it's a very good and powerful photographic equipment], you may not be able to get the pictures you desire. It's not a simple point and shoot camera.

It could be that 'IF' you're not familiar with DSLR usage, you could get normal or even bad pictures of what you shoot. This is not to demean your skills, I'm just sharing fact. I'm not expert either; I'm sharing what I know is right.

If you don't have any such problems as above, a DSLR is a good choice then. Among Canon and Nikon, both are good, and I'm a Canon user now [a 550D]..

If you think you 'don't' need a DSLR, then I can recommend the Lumix DMC-FZ35. It's an advance point and shoot, called 'Bridge cameras'.. It's got good zoom [18x optical zoom] and also 12 Megapixel cam. It's a superb camera and there are thousands of reviews on the internet for it. Infact, it is one of the undisputed, superbly rated bridge camera [also called superzoom cameras].
It will surely fall well within 30K, heck you'll even save a few Ks for a nice bag and memory cards. Good thing here is, it will also also record videos in HD [not full HD, but at 720P; it's still great videos].

I'm not sharing specs here, as you can find them by the dozen in the reviews.

Other than the FZ35, I'm not sure of which superzoom camera to recommend. Simply because this one beats them all. Don't take my word for it; please search all forums you possibly can.

If you still want a DSLR, I can recommend the Canon EOS 1000D, a good beginner DSLR with 10 megapixel cam. It can be bought for about 22K, but the kit lens that comes with the camera is non-stabilized. If you want an IS [image stabilization] lens, then you could exchange the non-IS lens with an IS one of the same specification [18-55mm] for about 1.5K to 2K more. Total should come under 25K anyway..

But the 1000D won't record videos. Also note, the 500D does record videos, at Full HD, but only at 20 fps [frames per second]. Good videos [and all movies] are shot at 24 fps.. The 550D can do that , but it's about 45.5K.

You can still go with 500D if you can get it [legit purchase or otherwise] for 30K, it's a very good camera, but keep in mind the video recording's shortcoming I've mentioned.

Ultimately, as a friend said on tbhp, research well, and choose your poison Wink

Sorry Uneet, for this ugly and long post. I've only tried to help you for your money's worth. Sorry if it only confused you more. See the DSLR is such a thing, it will confuse you..

oh btw!! Irrespective of your camera, remember to get Class 6 and above SDHC [Secure Digital high capacity] memory card, if you want to shoot videos. Storage can be 4GB or 8Gb, whatever.. 2GB will be very less space for a DSLR or even for the FZ35..

Hi Ajay,

Thks for your long post.

The reason why I need a DSLR over a print camera is that at times we need to transfer the digital image to the client immdly after taking the shot. Really can't wait to order prints and than scan the same to be sent.

Besides this Iam currently using Fuji 6900 for the last 5-6 yrs.
This has been solving my requirements to a great extent till recently but I think now the time has come to change it for good.

Regarding skills - I totally agree that photography involves a real skill element and I would still consider myself an amature in the same.

Also let me know more about Fuji HS10. This is available for around 25k, but I can have it in the range of 16k-17k. Do you think this can also be considered at this price?

Having used an FZ 35 since Feb this year, I can say it is good and will be good enough for your stated requirements and beyond. Grey market rates are substantially lower but warranty of 1 year may not be available.

I got mine for 18.5k!! Panasonic dealer rate was 26999 with one year warranty.

Ease of shooting as well as picture clarity are plus points of FZ 35. It may equal entry level SLRs if you can bring the best out it.

I suggest you look up cameralabs.com too for unbiased reviews.

Trust me, the camera buying process is not simple and you should know what your needs are to get the best buy. Buying the Fabia was infinitely easy.
Anyway take time to research the web and find the right camera for you.
A knowledgeable friend/ friendly studiowala will also be of great help.

I think you should go with a DSLR. I have a Fujifilm Finepix s6500Fd, which is one of the better Bridge Cameras, but when it comes to tough situations like low-light, fast moving objects, etc. a DSLR is way too superior to a bridge camera. Also almost all DSLR's come with standard predefined settings like in bridge camera's. Learning curve wouldn't be that steep. Also most of the DSLR's now come with Image stabilized lenses or have it built into the camera body itself. I am sure you will enjoy photography with a DSLR rather than a bridge camera, especially the handling(speed between shots, continuous shooting speed, shutter lag etc) which makes all the difference in my opinion.

Iam also inclined towards a DSLR and I agree with Ramesh that speed between shots, continuous shooting speed, shutter lag etc does makes the difference.

Besides this I have been using a Fuji 6900 already for quite some time and I feel I need to upgrade further now.
